Inter-scholastic Chess Matches

Matches
All matches are on  Fridays after school in the host school's cafeteria. You'll play two games each night at 35 min per player. All official games will be notated and will have clocks if available. Bring a snack. Arrange for a ride home at around 5:45 or 6:00

Alternates
Alternates may play on the team if needed, may be put on the team at the coach's discretion, may play scrimmage games against an alternate from another school, may choose to play one scrimmage game then take the activity bus home, may choose to skip that match if not needed.

Results
Against Faithful Shepherd with a four-player team of mostly subs we managed to win 3-2.
Aidan lost on board 1 against a player who has beaten most of the other team's top players - including Metcalf A. But John won on  board 2, Dylan won on board 3, and Boomer who arrived after the other games had started was allowed to play on board 4 and won. Board 5 we forfeited. Round 6 we lost to Metcalf 5-0, but we don't have to face them again.

We lost to Metcalf A 5-0 and lost to Metcalf C 4-1
We lost to Metcalf B 4 -1 and lost to Friendly Hills 3-2
We beat Faithful Shep. 3-2 and lost to Metcalf A 5-0.

CHESS TEAM
We have joined a chess league for Middle Schools where we can compete against other schools in the area. We name our five top players. In case one or more cannot attend on a particular day, we will use players 6-9 (or more) to fill the roster. Most games will be played at Heritage or Friendly Hills; some at Metcalf. Games will be played after school on Fridays.

We had a lesson on undermining and did a worksheet on undermining
We also discussed the possibility of competing agains Friendly Hills for a travelling trophy.  The idea was well-received.

WHEN: Saturday Dec 7, 2019 from 8:15 to about 3:00

WHERE: Metcalf M.S. in Burnsville

WHO: Anyone pre-school to 12th grade. You will play other children in your same grade.

HOW: To register show up before 8:30 with $22 and money for lunch.

WHY: Have fun, make new friends, earn awards.

Do I have to "make the team"? Nope, not in chess. You are automatically on the team.

If I lose do I go home? No, you'll play 5 games. 

What if I lose m first 3 games? You'll play against someone with the same record.
HOW MANY GAMES WILL I WIN? If it's your first tournament, your goal is to try to win 1 game.

Mid-term Exams

Chess Sets
At this time of year, I usually put in a group order and order chess sets like the ones we use at chess club. I usually get a good discount by ordering bulk, frequent customer, split shipping, etc. Includes vinyl and cloth roll-up board, pieces with extra queens, large carrying case with handles, sleeve for board and zippered compartment for pieces. Cost is usually $12 to $14 which is better that the $20 if you ordered yourself or $40 at a store. Send me an e-mail at gemshein@hotmail.com if you'd like one.

Tournament
Chase and Boomer each gained some rating points at the last tournament and won some games.
Let's put together an 8th grade team: Silas (playing up a grade), Jackson and Boomer. Those 3 are rising to the top. I'm not sure how well the rest of you would do, but if you enjoy playin and don't mind losing, you might have a good time at a tournament and it's one of the best ways to improve.

Everyone outscored their ratings except Maize who had the highest rating.
the way I scored it was 50 points per problem with partial credit on some problems for good, but not the best, answers. Since everyone starts at 100, I added 100 to your test score. Your rating moved 10% closer to your exam score.
