 We went over the worksheet on forks and learned two new tactics called the hurdle and the skewer and had a chance to solve some problems.

Next Tournament

If you are in 5th or 6th grade, set aside May 7th and 8th for a great tournament! For more details, see the previous post or go to school chess.org for more information and to register on-line. 

Lessons

I combined the two sections of the class into one.

We went over some difficult problems involving overloaded pieces.

The we had a lesson on forks and a worksheet with 8 problems.

LESSONS

We learned how to checkmate with just a king and rook.

The advanced class learned how to detect an overloaded piece and how to take advantage of it. We had some difficult problems from grandmaster games which we'll go over next Wed.

Statewide K-6 Championships (Team and Individual)
This time you'll be playing against students in grades 4-6 (no 7th 8th or 9th graders)
May 7-8 Robbinsdale Middle School
We need 4 or more players for a full team.
Invite your friends from Heritage who play chess even if they're not in chess club.

I think we might have a chance for a team trophy with Ben, Warren, Owen and Henry.

Beginners Learned some open strategy. Control the center. Develop your knights and bishops first. Don't get your queen out too soon.

Advanced okays learned a tactics called undermining.
