 TOURNAMENT COMING UP !

Sat April 9            Plymouth Middle School - Mid. Sch. Champ. Need 3+ for a team.

Note - Masks required for all.

This tournament is to determine the top middleschool chess clubs in Minnesota. A school can have as many students participate as they want but only the top three scores will be totaled to get the team score. A win counts 1 point, a draw counts half a point. So we'd like our top 3 players there. It's clearly an advantage to have more than three which gives us more players to chose from when we count the top three scores. You don't have to worry about doing poorly and ruining our score since you can only add to our score.

So far Leo, Saarkar, Ben, and Elliot D. have signed up. Anyone else who would like the experience of participating in a chess tournament is welcome. You don't even have to be in chess club - as long as you attend Heritage. It should be a lot of fun.  I estimate that there will be about 10 teams there. Last year we scored 2 points and came in sixth place out of 6 schools.

How to sign up. go to www.schoolchess.org to register on-line or show up before 8:00

When: plan on being at Plymouth Middle School be 8:15 You will play 5 games at approx. 8:45, 10:00, 11:15, 12:30 and 1:45

Who will I play? Someone with the same record as you

Chess Spring Session

Chess Club is set to go again Wed March 23
I divided the class into two sections - 1st timers and those who were in chess in the fall.
We meet in room 142 from 3:20 until 5:00. Note the change in location!

Beginners learned why Bishops, Queens and Knights belong near the middle of the board, while rooks are happy on the edge. We learned why you have to be careful if you are moving your queen to the same color square as your king is on.

Advanced players learned the intricate secrets the King vs King and Pawn ending. Hopefully you learned about the safety zone, opposition, distant opposition, the magic 6th rank.
If you advance the pawn to the 7th rank with check, you will ______
